The state of free speech on college campuses across the country has become dire. Even at the nation’s most renowned and prestigious universities, conservative students are penalized by their professors for voicing their views, conservative speakers are driven off campus by leftist mobs, and conservative professors risk losing their jobs for expressing their political views.
The situation on college campuses is both a threat to free speech and a threat to conservatism since it prevents bright young students from ever being exposed to ideas that fall outside of the leftist worldview. Now, President Trump is finally taking action to stop this crisis by vowing to a sign a college free speech executive order.
So far, there aren’t many details about exactly what this new executive order will entail. All Trump has said regarding the order is that he will sign an executive order that requires colleges to “support free speech” if they want to be eligible to receive federal funding for research.
Whatever form the executive order ends up taking, it is bound to be a step in the right direction. The left’s stranglehold over free speech on college campuses is both a serious injustice to students at those campuses as well as a threat to the very backbone of our democracy. Hopefully, Trump’s executive order will begin the process of righting a terrible wrong that has been allowed to go unaddressed for far too long.
