NY Gov. Cuomo: “America Was Never That Great”
Patriotism and respect for our great country are becoming qualities that are harder and harder to find among modern-day leftists. In liberal universities, students are taught that America’s history contains nothing but shame, and even liberal officials who are voted in to lead this nation have become loathe to admit any pride in the country they call home.
The most recent example of this comes from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo who said in a speech, “We’re not going to make America great again. America was never that great.”
This comment, of course, is a response to Trump’s “Make America great again” slogan, and it isn’t exactly out of line with the position that most Democrats have taken on this slogan. Rather than arguing that America is already great, the majority of Democrats have taken issue with the slogan by saying it’s impossible to return America to something that it never was.
Those who point out the flaws in America’s past, though, refuse to see the reality that the same flaws existed everywhere else in the world as well, only to a much greater extent. The United States has had its shortcomings and still does, but that doesn’t change the reality that it is the freest, most tolerant, and most prosperous country the world has ever known. If Democratic leaders such as Cuomo refuse to accept the exceptionalism of the United States, proud, patriotic voters need to refuse to accept them.
