With the 2018 midterms right around the corner, both Democrats and Republicans alike seem optimistic about their chances. Democrats promise a “blue wave”, an overwhelming Democratic victory that will come as a backlash against Trump and the GOP. Many Republicans, meanwhile, are confident that the GOP’s massive victories in 2016 were only the start of a much larger, longer-lasting movement. Where, though, between these two extremes does the truth lie?
Polling shows us that Democrats currently enjoy a lead in the generic Congressional ballot, but we know from 2016 just how wildly inaccurate these polls can be. Historic trends show us that the party in power tends to lose seats in Congress during midterm elections, but past trends are far from a foolproof indicator of future results, particularly in the wildly unprecedented political climate of 2018.
Perhaps more than any other midterm election in history, Republican voters are energized and far from complacent. The same thing could be said of Democratic voters as well, making for a very interesting setup. We’ll know soon enough which party comes out on top this November, but for now, it’s important to understand that a “blue wave” is certainly not guaranteed.
