Is it Time for the Government to Break Up Social Media Companies?

Social media companies such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and others have come to wield an enormous amount of power in US politics. In 2019, these few companies have become gatekeepers of information, single-handedly controlling the majority of information that most Americans see on a daily basis.

Already, we’ve seen just how dangerous this control can be, as social media companies have actively worked to silence conservative voices and promote a liberal agenda. Now, the question is whether or not these companies should be broken up by the US government?

In most cases, breaking up companies is an action more associated with the Democratic party than it is with the GOP. Republicans, which tend to lean in favor of letting the free market run its course, are hesitant to get involved with the private sector. This ideology on behalf of the GOP is a big part of why nothing has been done to stop these social media companies as of yet.

As much faith as conservatives have in the free market, though, there are times when the government needs to act, and now is one of those times. If left unimpeded, social media companies will only strengthen their grip on the flow of information and continue to weaken first amendment rights in the process.
