Trump’s New Sanctions are Severely Punishing Iran

In the midst of growing hostilities from the Iranian government, President Trump has signed an executive order issuing new sanctions against the country.

These latest round of sanctions against Iran are designed to prevent Iranian officials from using the international banking system or any financial system set up by countries outside of Iran. They also follow an arguably much more consequential set of sanctions that Trump issued against Iran this spring that were designed to cut off Iran’s oil revenue.

The order just days after Iran shot down an unmanned US drone over international waters. At the time, President Trump was prepared to launch a military response to this action, but reportedly called off the attack upon learning how many lives would be lost.

Trump’s sanctions against Iran are working in the sense that they have been crippling to the nation’s economy. However, these sanctions are also backing the Iranian regime into a corner, forcing them to choose between letting their regime fall and going to war with the United States. Now, President Trump and his administration can only sit back and see what Iran will do next.
