Our Culture is Manufacturing Mass Shooters

We know we are living contrary to human nature. We know weakening the family weakens both the individual and society. We know that consumerism is no replacement for the requisite sense of belonging that makes people a part of something that they need — and that needs them. And we know that piling people up with rights, entitlements, and a sense of either victimhood or guilt takes away their vital energy, leaving them sullen, vindictive, and dangerous.

Yet we encourage people to live as isolated individuals — competing with their neighbors rather than cooperating with them. Our culture sows discord in the family, teaching children their elders are ‘out of it’ and cultivating adults who are alienated by the youth. Generation after generation, we fail to instill the young with purpose. We fail to teach them their inherent nobility, and imbue them with vitalizing responsibility. The result is a nation full of aimless, self seeking, disconnected people with no nobility of purpose — no sense of duty — only the intense pressure to be better than others, to own more, to get more, to be better than the other guy.

The product of such a society is barely human at all. Alone, hungry for empty experience and material things, the callow modern American is more beast than human.

Yet, we wring our hands and wonder why there are mass shootings. This is the revenge of the isolated individual against a society that failed to form up around him and make him into what he could have been.
