Jokes need a few things to work. They need to be culturally relevant. They need to make sense. They have to have an element of absurdity, and they have to at least push some taboo or another. The same is true of movies, art, and just about anything creative and meaningful. This is no less true of rock and roll music.
Rock and roll music was birthed out of the amazing and deeply offensive traditions of blues and jazz. It threatened to destroy the family — if you asked the moralists of the 1960s. But it achieved beautiful things between the late 50s and the early 80s. Without it, a whole generation would never have had the courage to go to work in bell bottom jeans and semi-long hair.
All joking aside though, rock and roll defined a generation of people too cool for the hippie movement that came before them — a generation who loved powerful cars, loud guitars, and that wasn’t too shy to take the money and run.
Today’s young adults are far too concerned about not hurting other people’s feelings to even watch a classic Mel Brooks movie — much less listen to a song from the 50s that suggests smearing sexual fluid on a wall just to get it off your hands.
Just imaging all the artistic greatness this generation is holding back. Just imagine what we might be missing for fear of a bad grade from a prudish feminist professor. Here’s Rebel Media on the glory of old-fashioned rock and roll.
