Why Social Media Companies Need to be Worried
On Monday, President Trump put social media companies on high alert, saying that it would be “very dangerous” for social media giants such as Facebook and Twitter to continue censoring conservative voices on their platforms. This statement follows a series of Tweets that the president published on Saturday calling social media companies out for failing to create a fair and open platform.
It’s obvious that these social media companies are in fact guilty of censoring and banning well-known conservatives, and it’s likewise obvious that they will continue to do so for as long as they are able to get away with it. The question becomes whether or not their actions will come back to haunt them. On that point, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee said that social media companies need to be very worried.
There are several possible consequences that could arise from the continued censorship practices of these companies, and all of them would be very difficult for companies such as Facebook and Twitter to stomach. These consequences include discrimination lawsuits, the rise of competing platforms that will encourage free speech, and, biggest of all, government regulation.
Trump’s warning to social media companies may be a sign that he is preparing to move forward with this last course of action. If government regulation is indeed on the table, social media companies had better right their wrongs before the freedom and business models that they now enjoy cease to exist.
