Is America’s Deep Political Divide Permanent?

There’s no denying the fact that the United States is deeply divided – arguably more divided than it has ever been since the country went to war with itself in the Civil War. The question, though, is where is this division coming from.

Saying that the country is divided between liberalism and conservatism is easy enough, but this answer doesn’t really cut to the heart of the issue. The reality is that there are two, very different visions for the future of our country – and we are deeply divided on which we should choose.

Conservatives in America cling to the Constitution, and believe that upholding principles such as limited government and the value of individual rights is the only path forward for our nation. Leftists, meanwhile, are fighting for a transition into a new era – one in which the Constitution is disregarded as an old, outdated document and replaced with a powerful, top-down government that is built around identity politics and socialist principles.

These two visions for the United States cannot coexist. They stand in direct opposition to one another, and only one can survive. When you cut to the heart of the matter, these two radically different visions for our country are the source of what is really dividing America.
