A nation is not its government, it is not its military, and it is not its laws. A nation is not a flag or an inspiring leader. A nation is its people, and the loyalty of that people to their community. The aforementioned things are just the trappings and the products of a nation.
Like your house, your car, and your insurance plans, the trappings of a nation can be valuable tools for the promotion of wellbeing. These things can quickly become the masters of the people who believe they own them. But this can only happen when our values become skewed.
As a nation, our values become skewed when we place the State itself in a place of higher importance than we place our neighbor. In so doing, we become loyal to the state first and to our neighbor second. When this is the case, we say nothing when military police drag our neighbors away in the night for political reasons. Perhaps this is the meaning of the admonishment to love thy neighbor as thyself.
This is the lesson of the last century. It’s a lesson that’s been hammered out in blood over and over with the communist regimes of Asia, Russia, and South America resulting in the slaughter of hundreds of millions.
Now, the same thing is happening to Europe. The once proud European cultures that birthed the West are commuting suicide.
