Americans Don’t Know Anything About Their Presidents
The United States celebrated Presidents’ Day on Monday, February 19. Although most of us remember this as a day to commemorate the leadership of our great nation, PregarU’s Will Witt discovered that some people have no idea about the basic history of the chief executive.
Witt did not ask questions about obscure presidents when he interviewed people walking along Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. Instead, he quizzed them on facts that nearly any elementary school student in a social studies class could answer.
Many, but not all, of those asked knew that George Washington was our first president. After that, their answers became murky and quite depressing to those of us who love our country. One woman who knew Washington was the first president under our Constitution struggled when asked the name of the second president. She finally answered, “the one after him.” Sad as that seems, she offered a ‘more correct’ answer than those who claimed that Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, or Theodore Roosevelt was the second president!
When Witt asked one man about his impressions about President Donald Trump’s Gettysburg Address (that Trump was not alive to deliver in 1863), he replied that he “didn’t even watch it.” Well, we conservatives have at least one thing in common with this aspiring presidential historian.
Many respondents showed a distinct bias against our current president, the 45th under the Constitution. We expected that. Witt’s segment also displays the widespread civic ignorance that many people have regarding the foundations of our history.
