One common argument that pro-abortion activists tend to fall back on is the argument that it is wrong to write laws based on the beliefs of one religious group. Using the principle of separation of church and state, they argue that one’s religious views should play no role in determining whether or not abortion should be legal. However, you don’t need religion to understand that abortion is a moral atrocity.
The idea that life begins in the womb is not only backed by religion – though many religions do support this idea – it is also backed by science. While it is difficult to define what constitutes human life in scientific terms, there is no denying the scientific fact that an unborn baby is a unique, individual, living organism separate from the mother’s own body and displaying every possible characteristic of human life save for the fact that it is inside the womb rather than outside it.
Once you accept the reality that an unborn child is an innocent human life, the evil of abortion becomes clear. No religion is required to know that killing innocent human beings – any innocent human beings – is morally wrong.
