Could Liberals Actually Become Republicans Soon?

It seems like a far stretch, but follow us on this: the Republican Party is currently more “liberal” than the Democratic Party.

Let’s clear up one thing up before we continue: “liberal” and “leftist” are not necessarily the same thing. While it’s true that there’s plenty of overlap — particularly on social issues — to be liberal the same thing as being a leftist in the classical sense.

When the word was first introduced into common discourse to describe political beliefs in the late 18th century, the word “liberal” meant almost completely the opposite of what many think it means today. Liberals at the time included the likes of Adam Smith, John Locke, Thomas Jefferson, and almost every other important figure in America’s founding. It was later used to describe anti-monarchist movements across Europe.

Even today, there’s an important distinction. While modern liberals oppose unchecked capitalism and tend to support generous government programs, they are still capitalists who like the free market to at least a marginal degree. Leftists do not. They oppose capitalism wholesale. They want society to be restructured from the ground up. And this is why people who currently call themselves liberals may soon also be calling themselves Republicans.

One America News has four reasons why this may soon be the case below.
