For every well-meaning action there are always unintended consequences. Nowhere is this more clear than our border laws concerning the children of illegal immigrants.
In an attempt to avoid detaining children who cross the border illegally for an extended period of time, current US law dictates that people who cross the border seeking asylum with children must be released into the United States to appear at a later court date after twenty days of being detained. Of course, a large number of these individuals will disappear into the country’s interior with no intentions of ever appearing for their court date. The bigger problem, though, is the fact that the children they bring with them are their ticket in.
While the laws against detaining families with children for more than twenty days may have come from good intentions, they are incentivizing child trafficking. Individuals looking to cross the border illegally know that if they enter the United States with a child, they will be released after twenty days. This fact encourages them to bring children along with them for what amounts to a very dangerous journey, sometimes even resorting to abducting children that are not their own to bring them along. What happens to these children after their abductors enter the country is a frightening unknown.
