Gun Control Issues Helping Ted Cruz in Texas
For some time now, Sen. Ted Cruz has been in an uncomfortably tight race with Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke. The latest polls, however, show that Cruz may be beginning to pull away from his left-wing opponent, as Sen. Cruz is now nine points ahead of O’Rourke.
It’s difficult to know for sure, but Beto O’Rourke’s slide in the polls is very likely directly correlated with his outspoken comments on gun control in Texas. O’Rourke has made it clear that he is in favor of implementing gun control policies in Texas and the nation at-large that are similar to the failed policies of California. These include banning certain types of rifles such as the AR-15 and limiting the legal magazine capacity.
Of course, Texas and gun control mix about as well as oil and water. Nothing drives died-in-the-wool Texans to the voting booth quite like a politician promising to take away their guns. It may be somewhat surprising that the rest of O’Rourke’s leftist policies have allowed him to gain substantial support in Texas, even given the state’s changing demographics, but gun control is one policy that simply isn’t going to fly in the Lone Star State. By making his position on guns well-known, Beto O’Rourke may have just eliminated any chance he had at defeating conservative Ted Cruz.
