If a hate crime reported by the national news media turned out to be fake, a normal person would react by taking a sigh of relief: thank God America isn’t rife with such vile behavior. This is not how Democrats are reacting to actor Jussie Smollett being exposed for staging an attack by white supremacists. In fact, they’re furious.
Let’s talk about why they’re so upset. The Jussie Smollett story involved two Trump supporters beating him up and using both racist and homophobic slurs while doing so. It supported everything they believe about President Trump himself and everyone who supports him: they’re the type of people who go around beating up black people and gay folks. This is their entire political worldview right now. So, when it turns out to be a complete fabrication, they don’t know how to move forward — and that makes them angry.
Just look at Senators Kamala Harris and Cory Booker — who are both running for president. When Smollett came forward with his fake story, neither of them wasted any time in taking to social media and using the strongest possible language to lend their support. Now, they look like idiots, and so does everyone who retweeted them.
