China Should Be Worried About Trump’s Progress with Mexico

When President Donald Trump announced that he was going to levy tariffs against Mexico unless they cooperated with the United States to fix the crisis at the border, many in the Democratic Party cried foul. It was only a matter of days, though, before Trump’s threat worked, forcing Mexico to the bargaining table.

Willing to do whatever it takes to avoid a trade war with the US, Mexico has now reached a deal with Trump and agreed to increase its border security. While this result is a huge win in our relations with Mexico, it’s also a result that should have China very concerned.

Trump’s progress with Mexico is proof that threats of tariffs and trade wars can be a very powerful negotiation tactic. Mexico could not afford a trade war with the United States, and was forced to come to an agreement that would eliminate the threat of tariffs. China, meanwhile, can ill afford a trade war with the US as well – and it seems as if it is only a matter of time before they too come to a compromise.

Trump’s success with Mexico has no doubt emboldened his administration and has given the American people proof that Trump’s hardball negotiation style works. If China was hoping that Trump would blink first in the ongoing trade war between the two countries, this is not the type of result that they wanted to see.
