Tucker Carlson: College is Now a Waste of Money

Although there is proof that those with college degrees make money over the course of their lifetime than those who choose to forgo post high school education, according to Bryan Caplan–a GMU Law Professor–college is a waste.

In the video, Professor Caplan explains that college isn’t right for everyone — although that has been the message propagated in today’s society. Caplan’s believes a person who was a good student in high school will likely do well in college. It will then be worth the investment for them because they will graduate and use their degree. However, if a person struggled to graduate high school, they will likely also struggle in college, making it a waste of time and money.

Professor Caplan believes only 5% of people actually benefit from attending elite colleges. Most people, the vast majority, don’t benefit it from it at all. Instead, it burdens people with a huge financial debt due to the ever-rising cost of a typical university education. Conversely, if a person chooses to forgo college and instead moves in another direction, they are often made to feel they are underachieving. This isn’t how Professor Caplan thinks college should be viewed, even though he is employed by a university.

He feels vocational education is much more beneficial for the masses. It is less expensive and gives people a marketable skill they can easily use to make money and be productive members of society.

Germany and Switzerland are using vocational educational routes much better than America. In Mr. Caplan’s opinion, we should study what they are doing with regard to post high school education and emulate it and stop wasting so much money on traditional college education.
