As the Supreme Court case spotlighting a battle between civil liberties and discrimination unfolds, Justices will hear the 2012 case from Christian baker Jack Phillips who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple due to his religious beliefs.
Phillips’ attorney indicated that the baker offered to sell the couple anything else in his shop and even said he would design a cake for them for another occasion, but the couple decided to file a lawsuit, which led to this five-year legal battle. The couple said the ordeal was humiliating, degrading, and painful, and didn’t want another couple to have to go through this kind of experience.
If losing his wedding cake business, which made up almost half of their income, wasn’t bad enough, Phillips indicates they have also lost most of their employees as well. Many left due to the continued death threats and excessive harassment, and were like his wife, who was afraid to go to the bakery for fear of being attacked.
Phillips is hopeful that the Supreme Court will rule in his favor and agree that he is being forced to use his artistic talents (of cake designing) to celebrate a same-sex marriage, which in turn violates his faith and artistic freedom.
“They were asking me to make a cake that would celebrate a view of marriage that goes against the core values of my faith’s view on marriage,” Phillips explained, and he was sued because he refused to do so.
