One of the unfortunate realities of history is the fact that it is cyclical. Past mistakes are often repeated in new and different ways, but the results are always the same. Now, however, we may be on the verge of returning to something that by all rights should have remained an unsettling relic of the past – segregation.
When asked if they support segregation in the form of blacks-only housing, blacks-only organizations, and blacks-only “safe spaces” a majority of college students answered “yes”. Unlike segregation of the past, though, this new form of segregation is allegedly designed to “protect” black students from white students rather than the other way around. Nevertheless, the results are just as damaging.
Segregation, no matter what form it takes, cannot benefit society. Our nation can only hope to succeed when we come together, put our differences aside, and work as one people with a common goal. Unity and understanding is what our society is lacking, yet, for many on the left, the answer to the symptoms of this problem is segregation.
Interestingly enough, though, the majority of black students who were interviewed did not support this new form of segregation.
