The accepted narrative of the left regarding police brutality and use of deadly force by a police officer states that racism is the driving motivation behind many instances when a police officer kills or otherwise harms a black or brown suspect.
This is a narrative that has led to the NFL anthem protests, disastrous city-wide riots, a negative view of police officers in minority communities, and more. Yet, according to a comprehensive study on police use of deadly force, it’s a narrative that is not based on factual evidence.
Two professors from Michigan St. and Arizona conducted a study that looked at all police shootings since 2009. The conclusion of their study was that there is no evidence of racism playing any role in police shootings that have taken place over the past nine years. Rather, the study found that the only factor leading to more police shootings for a given group was number of crimes committed.
Since black communities have a higher number of crimes committed per capita, the study concludes that the disproportionate number of black individuals who are shot by the police is entirely due to the number of crimes committed, and not systematic racism in the police force.
