The Rise and Fall of Jeff Sessions
Not too long ago, Jeff Sessions was considered a close, powerful ally to both President Trump and the GOP. Sessions was one of the first senators to come out in support of Trump during the 2016 election, and he seemed like a natural choice for a high-level cabinet position.
Since being appointed to the position of attorney general, though, Sessions has fallen far out of the president’s favor. The rift between them first started when Sessions recused himself from the Russian collusion investigation – a decision which effectively paved the way for the Mueller investigation that has been a thorn in President Trump’s side ever since it started. In the time since Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation, the president and his attorney general have disagreed on one issue after another. While Trump was hoping for a head of the DOJ that would ferociously fight on issues such as illegal immigration, Sessions has been timid and complacent, hesitant to charge into any legal battle or controversy.
It’s difficult to say if and for how long Trump will keep Sessions as his attorney general. Right now, it looks as if Trump will most likely wait until re-election in 2020 before appointing a new AG. In the meantime, though, it’s a safe bet that Jeff Sessions will continue to slip out of the favor of both Trump and the GOP.
