Russia Claims that Syrian Chemical Attack was Staged

The United States is on the brink of being drawn into another conflict with Syria after a chemical attack that took place in the Eastern Ghouta town of Douma killed dozens of civilians, including several children.

The White House has blamed both Syria and Russia for the attack, and both the US, France, and Britain have since responded to the incident with airstrikes aimed at crippling the Assad regime in the country. The Russian military, however, contends that the attack was a false flag operation carried out by Syrian rebels in order to draw the US and her allies back to their cause.

At first glance, it is suspicious why Assad would authorize a chemical attack knowing that the benefit such an attack would be negligible while the consequences would be severe. However, both the US and France have insisted that their intelligence has provided proof that Assad is to blame for the attack, and given the unpredictability of dictators such as Assad it certainly isn’t out of the question.

Russia has warned that any airstrikes in the area that come as a result of this attack could start a war, ramping up US-Russia tensions to a dangerous level. If there is indeed proof that Assad is to blame for the attack, though, the US and her allies cannot afford to let such an action go unpunished.
