North Korea Threatens to Cancel Meeting with President Trump
There’s no denying that President Trump has made some major gains with North Korea. Trump’s tough talk combined with crippling sanctions has forced North Korea to the negotiating table for the first time in decades. At one point, it looked as if Kim Jong-Un was ready to officially end the war with South Korea and denuclearize the peninsula. Now, though, this progress may be on shaky ground.
Even those celebrating Trump’s accomplishments regarding North Korea warned that the word of Kim Jong-un could not be taken for granted. After initially seeming open to making these major concessions, Kim Jong-un is backpedaling, having already canceled a meeting with South Korea and threatening to cancel his historic summit with President Trump.
The North Korean leader blames these cancellations and threats of cancellation on the joint military exercises that the US recently conducted with South Korea, though he has also said that he will not meet with Trump if the president insists that North Korea destroy its nuclear arsenal.
Only time will tell how much Kim Jong-un is willing to give up and how ready he truly is for peace between the North and South. While progress has certainly been made, it’s simply to early to know how much of that progress North Korea will follow through with.
