The best way to understand the immigration issue is to compare the nation-state to a single family home. It’s been said many times that the family unit is the basic building block for a nation. Just as the single cell is the building block for a living thing, so is the family to a country.

The reason the family is seminal is that it is the best and only way to raise and protect children. In the end, you will see that all good and all evil is about whether or not you are protecting children. This is the case because children have what the philosophers call the quality of “throwness.” That is to say, they are thrown into the world.

We, in fact, throw our children into the world. That is why we have a moral duty to protect and nurture them. That is why the family unit is central to moral uprightness.

So, families are kept in homes. A family, like a nation, has the right to permit or deny outsiders to enter. This is because the keepers of the home have a duty to protect the children that are kept in that home. By extension, a nation has the same right to erect borders. This is a way for the nation to ensure the ability of families to protect their children.

These simple truths are basic to the human condition. As social creatures we organize together and these traditions are foundational. The human family is remembering these things. That is why nationalism is spreading.
