Democrats seem certain that they will come out on top in the 2018 midterms. However, the outcome of these elections is far from settled.
A recent generic poll shows that 39% of voters favor Republicans while 38% favor Democrats, giving Republicans a slight advantage. Furthermore, more than half of all Democrat senators are up for re-election this year while only 8 Republican senators face re-election in 2018.
At the same time, the fact that 23% of all poll respondents were undecided about who to vote for in the midterms means that the elections are really a toss-up. It is also worth noting that turnout for midterm elections is typically significantly lower than turnout for presidential elections. The percentage of people favoring a particular party is indicative of who might win a particular race, but is not necessarily the most important factor.
A candidate hoping to win election or re-election in the midterm election would need to go to great lengths to motivate his or her base to get out and vote and provide practical assistance to those who have trouble doing so.
The midterm elections are certain to be an interesting time. While it’s impossible to predict who will win most of the races, what can be said for certain is that any changes in the balance of power will definitely have an outsize impact on the President’s ability to push his agenda or even to remain in office as Democrats across the country continue to push for impeachment proceedings.
