A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found 57% of Americans have less than $1,000 currently in their savings account. Therefore, it’s safe to say that for most American’s, 1,000 extra dollars in their pockets would be anything but arbitrary.
However, according to Democratic Party elites, the $1,000 that some Americans will get back through bonuses thanks to recent tax cuts isn’t enough money to matter.
This video from a town hall meeting about President Donald Trump’s tax cuts features some prominent Democrats sharing their opinions on why $1,000 won’t help Americans.
Democratic representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida said, “I’m not sure that $1,000 goes very far for anyone.” Interestingly enough, Wasserman Schultz was the same person who claimed she was “appalled” that the House GOP neglected to extend the payroll tax cuts.
For comparison sake, this extension would have only given around $40 to workers. Wasserman Schultz even led a Twitter campaign encouraging tweets showing what $40 means to Americans using the hashtag #40Dollars.
It seems the same people who claimed to be on the side of common, middle-class Americans back when the “mean” GOP was set to make a change that would’ve taken away $40, are the very same people who claim $1,000 isn’t enough to make a difference. That seems odd. How can $40 be a lot of money at one time and $1,000 not be a lot of money a few years later? Who knows?
