Recently, President Donald Trump delivered a harsh ultimatum to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador – either crack down on illegal immigration and prevent Central American immigrants from ever reaching the U.S. border, or face a crippling tariff increase.
In response, an angry Obrador sent a letter to the White House calling Trump’s “America first” policy a “fallacy” — suggesting that it is not possible for Trump to fix the immigration problem with such coercive measures.
It didn’t take long at all, though, for President Obrador to prove himself wrong. With the June 10 deadline that Trump gave him swiftly approaching, Obrador is already set to begin negotiations in Washington.
According to Trump, Obrador has the power to make a significant difference in America’s illegal immigration problem simply by cracking down on illegal immigration in his own country. So far, though, this is something that President Obrador has been unwilling to do. Now faced with a 5% tariff increase that could increase all the way to 25% in the coming months, however, Obrador has little choice but to come to the negotiating table.
