Meet Your New Secretary of State

While President Donald Trump firing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson may have come as a surprise to many, it certainly didn’t to those within the White House who have watched the president’s relationship with his Secretary of State slowly deteriorate as the months went on. Now that Tillerson is out, it’s time to take a closer look at his replacement, Mike Pompeo.

Mike Pompeo graduated from West Point and Harvard Law before going on to serve in Congress as the representative for Kansas’s 4th congressional district. After Donald Trump took office, he tapped Pompeo to serve as the Director of the CIA – a position he has held since January 23, 2017.

Perhaps much more important than Mike Pompeo’s pedigree, though, is his relationship with President Trump. Unlike Trump and Tillerson, Pompeo and Trump tend to see eye-to-eye on most issues, and the president has developed a close relationship with Pompeo since appointing him to serve as the Director of the CIA. Since the president and the Secretary of State must work closely together on some of the most important issues facing the country, it’s imperative that they have common ground on these issues. Along with being well-qualified, Mike Pompeo should fit the bill of someone that Trump will be able to consider a close ally.
