Why Israel was Smart to Strike Iran

Throughout his presidency, Barack Obama took a very soft stance toward Iran, believing that they could be easily moderated in order to provide a relatively peaceful counterbalance to Israel in the Middle East. The Iran nuclear deal was based largely on this ambition and was an attempt to empower Iran while at the same time curbing their nuclear ambitions.

The undeniable reality, though, is that Iran is not and likely never will be the peaceful counterbalance that Obama envisioned. After Iranian forces fired on Israeli forces, Israel conducted one of its largest airstrikes to date, effectively wiping out all of the military infrastructure that Iran had positioned in Syria, and killing at least 23 soldiers in the process. While many on the left have chastised Israel for these strikes, the fact remains that it was smart for Israel to strike Iran now.

Following Trump’s decision to exit from the Iran nuclear deal, Iranian leaders have promised to ramp up their nuclear ambitions, target Israeli forces, and further promote violence in the Middle East.

All of this goes to prove that the Iran nuclear deal has done nothing to truly neutralize the Iranian threat, and instead only tempered their aggression momentarily while they were allowed to grow stronger every day. With the full support of allies in the region such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and other, Israel’s decision to strike back hard against Iran’s aggression sends a powerful message that the retaliation Iran has promised will not be tolerated.
