Washington Police Chief Says He Won’t Enforce New Gun Law
Though democracy is lauded as the most moral form of government, the reality is that democracy can sometimes be very dangerous – which is why the Framers actually took great measures to protect the nation from unchecked mob rule by simple majority. The reality is that there are times when a majority of people are still wrong. This is what happened in Washington when the state’s residents voted to approve an unconstitutional gun control law.
Washington State Initiative 1639 outlaws the sale of semiautomatic rifles to anyone under the age of 21, enforces a 10-day waiting period for all semi-automatic rifle purchases, and forces handgun buyers to sign waivers that allow the police to search their personal records.
Now that Washington State Initiative 1639 has become law in the state, it falls to the police in Washington to enforce this new law. However, one Washington police chief has gone on record saying that he refuses to enforce the new law. Given the choice between upholding the will of the majority and upholding the Constitution, this police chief has decided that upholding the Constitution is a far more important duty.
