Once a wealthy and powerful nation, Venezuela has been reduced to a nation of extreme poverty and starvation thanks almost entirely to the consequences of socialism. After years of suffering under a socialist government full of leaders that have only their own interests at heart, the people of Venezuela are now on the verge of revolt. The question is what should the United States do about this revolt, and will a Venezuela uprising be good for the US?
The reality is that no one knows for sure. Overthrowing governments hasn’t worked out very well for the United States in the past and has often only made the situation even worse than it was before. At the same time, though, Venezuela used to be a wealthy country, and the prospect of having a wealthy South American ally to trade with does have its appeal.
Of course, freeing the people of Venezuela from socialism and demonstrating to the world how beneficial liberation from socialism can be is an important consideration as well.
Moving forward, President Trump and the White House will have to carefully consider the situation in Venezuela to determine if supporting an uprising is in our best interests.
