In spite of the fact that House Democrats have gathered exactly zero evidence that President Trump colluded with Ukraine to gather dirt on Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and her Democratic colleagues are now preparing to push forward with impeachment proceedings.
For a long time, though, Pelosi was against trying to impeach Trump, saying it was a move that made little political sense. Now, in spite of the fact that Pelosi seems to have changed her mind, moving forward with impeachment is still a poor choice for the Democratic Party.
Let’s start with the fact that there is no chance of Democrats successfully impeaching Trump before the 2020 election. So long as Mitch McConnell remains the Senate majority leader, articles of impeachment will likely never be brought to the Senate floor. Even if impeachment is brought to a vote in the Senate, Democrats would need 64 votes in a Republican majority Senate to actually remove Trump from office.
Given this reality, one can only assume that Pelosi’s impeachment push is a political strategy. The problem, however, is that most of the nation remains against impeachment. Attempting to impeach the President will do little to sway voters who are on the fence about voting for Trump in 2020. What it will do, though, is fire up Trump’s core base and ensure that they turn out in droves when the ballot boxes open on election day.
