Trump Wouldn’t Have to Do This if Congress Would do its Job
Recently, President Donald Trump embarked on his latest attempt to solve the border crisis, this time by coercing Mexico to help. Trump issued an ultimatum to Mexican President Andrés Obrador, telling him that unless his country cracks down on illegal immigration and helps stop the flow of immigrants crossing the Mexican border into the US, Trump will impose a 5% tariff on all Mexican goods imported into the United States.
So far, the ultimatum seems to be working, as President Obrador has hinted that he is willing to work with Trump if it means preventing a trade war with Mexico’s biggest trading partner. Having Mexico crack down on illegal immigration would be a huge boost to our own border security. However, none of this would be necessary if Congress would simply do its job.
Already, Democratic politicians are blasting Trump for strongarming Mexico and threatening tariffs. What they fail to realize, though, is that they are the ones who have put the President in this position. Trump has tried time and time again to secure the funding needed to solve the border crisis, and time and time again Congressional Democrats have blocked these efforts. Meanwhile, the situation at the border has only grown increasingly worse, forcing Trump to pursue alternative avenues.
Newt Gingrich, who has plenty of experience in running a Congress, provides an invaluable perspective below.
