2019 kicked off with less-than-positive news on the economic front as the markets took a hard dip. The jury is still out on whether or not Wall Street will be able to recover and match the historic highs it saw earlier in the Trump presidency, but the official December jobs report gives us hope.
It’s important to remember that the stock market is only one of the many indicators of the state of the economy. In fact, it’s not inaccurate to say that it’s one of the worst ways to look at the economy if you’re ignoring all of the other factors. The stock market is very speculative, and the numbers are pretty volatile when there is a perception of uncertainty. With Democrats re-taking the House of Representatives and Republicans maintaining control of the Senate in the last election cycle…maybe the stock market’s latest tumble isn’t the most random thing in the world.
Thankfully, the stock market doesn’t govern the economy. In capitalist societies, economies more or less govern themselves. That’s why the latest available jobs report is so encouraging.
