President Trump’s first Oval Office address featured a rousing speech on the crisis at the border and why a border wall is the only effective answer. Not to be outdone in the war of public opinion, Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer quickly gathered to deliver their counter to Trump’s address. Once you get past the awkwardness and stiffness of Pelosi and Schumer is this address, one takeaway becomes obvious – the Democrats are out of arguments.
They can no longer argue that there is no crisis at the border. The lives lost at the hands of illegal immigrants are mounting up, studies have cast a spotlight on the economic costs of illegal immigration, and the drugs pouring over our border continue to wreak havoc across the nation.
Likewise, Democrats can no longer argue against the effectiveness of a border wall. Border patrol agents – those who understand the challenges of border protection better than anyone – are overwhelmingly in favor of a physical barrier at the border.
Giving in to Donald Trump and allowing him to fulfill his most important campaign promise is not an option, though. With no arguments left to deliver, Pelosi and Schumer have been reduced to fumbling speeches and unfounded emotional appeals.
