Today, the Democratic Party presents an almost entirely united front on the issue of immigration, calling for open borders, amnesty for illegal aliens, and even the abolition of ICE. However, it wasn’t too long ago that many Democrats who are still in power today discussed the need for the United States to crack down on illegal immigration.
Senators Chuck Schumer, Dianne Feinstein, and Harry Reid are just a few Democratic politicians who once had an entirely different stance on illegal immigration. They recognized the economic and national security threat that it posed, and even presented potential solutions for the US to combat those threats.
Today, though, this stance on illegal immigration is nothing but a distant memory. Once Democrats realized the political leverage that illegal immigration offered – leverage such as the ability to attack those on the right as racists and xenophobes for opposing illegal immigration and leverage such as the ability to manufacture a new Democratic voting block by encouraging illegal aliens to vote – it didn’t take long for their views to suddenly change.
For those who take the time to look, though, the enormous flip that Democrats have made on illegal immigration is obviously evident, leaving even moderate voters to wonder why they made such a dramatic shift in their stance.
