When celebrity Jussie Smollett claimed that he was harassed and assaulted by racist Trump supporters wearing MAGA hats, those in the liberal media began licking their lips. Here was a golden opportunity for them to spend at least a couple of weeks blaming the attack on Trump’s “rhetoric” and labeling all Trump supporters as hateful racists. It was a story that the media could have got a lot of mileage out of – if the story had been true.
Shortly after Smollett’s account of the alleged attack gained national attention, sources within the local media and police department came out saying that the attack never happened and that the entire thing was staged by Smollett. This should have been enough to cause any self-respecting journalist to step away from the story. However, many in the media have decided to ignore the evidence that the attack was staged and run with the story anyway.
This is how badly many on the left want Smollett’s story to be true. Though entirely false, Smollett’s account of the attack validates the left’s outrageous view of Trump’s America. In the end, this validation along with the opportunity it provides to attack Trump and his supporters is much more important to many in the media than the truth.
