It wasn’t that long ago that merely the word “socialism” struck fear and disdain into the hearts of Americans on both the right and left of the political spectrum.
Now, as the Democratic party continues to shift further and further to the left in an attempt to avoid more embarrassing defeats such as those suffered during the 2016 election, socialism is an ideology that those on the left have come to embrace — so much so that the openly socialist candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently defeated the incumbent Joe Crowley in New York’s Democratic primary.
What’s even more shocking is the fact that the Democratic Party is celebrating her victory, calling it a win for the party and a win for the United States. Of course, much of this celebration stems from the typical identity politics of the left given that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a Latin American woman and Joe Crowley is a white man. Yet, the fact that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a socialist has not been ignored by prominent Democrats celebrating her victory – it’s been embraced.
If the lessons of the past are not learned, mistakes of the past are bound to be repeated. Time and time again, socialism has proven to be the downfall of once powerful countries. If socialism is allowed to continue to spread in the United States at its current rate, we can’t expect the results to be any different.
