Rep. Ilhan Omar Calls for Defunding Homeland Security
Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar has made plenty of headlines since she was elected to Congress. She was just the second representative in history to be sworn in on a Quran rather than a Bible, and her anti-semitic remarks quickly landed her in hot water with even House Speaker Nancy Pelosi condemning her statement that the U.S. only supports Israel because it gets “benjamins” from Jewish lobbyists.
Now, though, Rep. Omar is finally ready to move past this controversy and begin focusing on policy — and defunding Homeland Security seems to be first on the agenda. In a Tweet, Rep. Omar said, “When Democrats stood our ground last month, we proved that Individual 1 does not have the public support to ram his hateful wall through Congress. Let’s stand firm: #Not1Dollar for DHS.”
While many Democrats have called for defunding ICE, Omar is the first Democrat to call for defunding the Department of Homeland Security entirely — a department that includes the Coast Guard, the TSA, the Secret Service, and FEMA.
Perhaps Omar was simply confused about what the DHS is and the role that it plays in our security, or perhaps she really does want to make neutering our nation’s defense the number one objective on her agenda. Either way, it’s not a great start to Rep. Omar’s career in Congress.
