Pelosi: A “Glass of Water” Could Have Won AOC’s District

Despite being positioned as the future of the Democratic Party, former waitress turned socialist politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is quickly falling out of favor with many party leaders.

Speaker of the House and the highest-ranking member of the Democratic Party Nancy Pelosi, in particular, has been increasingly critical of Ocasio-Cortez. However, her most critical comment on Ocasio-Cortez to-date came in a recent speech when Pelosi shrugged off the significance of Ocasio-Cortez’s victory, saying that “a glass of water with a ‘D’ written on it” could have won her district.

While it’s true that Ocasio-Cortez’s victory over her incumbent Democratic opponent in the primary race was an upset that no one saw coming, Pelosi is right to say that her path to Congress was smooth sailing from that point forward. No one inside or outside of Ocasio-Cortez’s district knew her Republican opponent’s name. Even if they did, the deeply blue district would have likely elected any Democrat on the ballot before they elected a Republican.

The bigger picture that can be taken from Nancy Pelosi’s comments, though, is just how far out of favor that Ocasio-Cortez has fallen. Since taking office, Ocasio-Cortez has embarrassed her party with missteps and laughably bad legislative proposals. Many party leaders are still coming to her defense, but others such as Pelosi have apparently grown tired of the circus that Ocasio-Cortez has created.
