So far, the list of Democratic presidential hopefuls is shaping up to be a packed field. As the 2020 election draws closer, though, one candidate has separated himself from the pack according to new polling. Bernie Sanders – the socialist senator from Vermont – would be one of the frontrunners to win the Democratic nomination if the election were held today, trailing only behind former Vice President Joe Biden.
Bernie Sanders gave Hillary Clinton a real challenge in 2016, despite the fact that everything about the Democratic primary was rigged in Clinton’s favor. Now that the party doesn’t have a clear favorite to get behind, Sanders could make a real push for the nomination in 2020.
As the popularity of socialism continues to rise in the United States, so does the popularity of Bernie Sanders and like-minded Democratic socialist politicians. One can hope that our country is still a long way off from electing a socialist to the highest position in the United States, but the latest polling is not promising.
