More than Half of College Students Prefer Diversity to Free Speech
Free speech is the only mechanism by which a free and open society can exist. The enshrinement of free speech as one our highest values flows from the direct experience that America’s Founders had with tyranny. They realized that not only do corruptible people have a strong will to power ,but that people’s political leanings are powerfully correlated with their temperament.
What that means is that a liberal person, (a true classical liberal — not a left-wing socialist) and a conservative person tend to see different worlds. They are prone to prefer different facts. That means there are people who can never see eye to eye, and each has valid points of view. Because each side believes it is inherently correct, there is a strong tendency for imbalance to bring about totalitarianism, which is the result of empowered extremism.
Therefore, the enshrinement of free speech is an unassailable good and a higher human principle that enables people to avoid bloody confrontation.
This is a fact that has been recognized throughout all of American history. When you suppress the speech of a group of people or ideologies, you give them the appeal of the taboo. Not only that but when hateful ideologies are silenced, those the intended victims of those ideologies cannot be warned of the danger.
Speech suppressing laws do not remove hate from the hearts of the hateful, it only removes the opportunity for the hated to be warned. Suppressing free speech is like cutting the rattle off of a rattlesnake and setting it loose.
Ann Coulter and Tucker Carlson discuss the attack on free speech from academia in the video below.
