Michael Knowles: Conservatives are Happier Than Leftists

Last year, a study published by Social Psychological and Personality Science concluding that, on average, conservatives are happier than leftists and find more purpose in life. If you simply observe conservatives and leftists in the national spotlight, there’s a good chance that you could come to the same conclusion.

On the whole, leftist leaders are bitter, angry, and unsmiling while conservative leaders tend to have far more laid back personalities.

While the study did not draw conclusions as to why conservatives are happier than leftists, there are a few likely reasons. The biggest of these has to do with personal autonomy. The conservative worldview sees individuals as being in charge of their own destiny. They are allowed to rise or fall as far as possible based on their own choices and decisions. This sense of control over your outcome in life is a powerful reason to be both happy about life and purpose-driven.

For leftists, though, the exact opposite is true. Leftists believe in a world where an individual’s life is dictated by shadowy powers such as institutionalized racism, the patriarchy, the one percent, and the list goes on. With the belief that everyone is out to hold them back and the belief that they have no real control over their lives, it’s unsurprising that the happiness of those on the left would suffer.
