Although he has been resistant to doing so in the past North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is now willing to meet with the U.S. to talk about denuclearization. In exchange for denuclearization, he would want added security guarantees for his country.
This is a major turning point when it comes to North Korea and nuclear weapons, because it marks the first time that Kim has said he’s willing to reduce his stockpile.
President Donald Trump had said he would be willing to negotiate with North Korea, but only if the time was right — marking yet another historic move. In response, Pyongyang has since stated that it is even open to peace talks.
Trump has made some remarks on Twitter about the turn of events. He has said he’s hesitantly hopeful about the prospect of the talks bringing an outcome that is favorable for the U.S. and its allies in East Asia. The talks are expected to take place in the coming months.
No one knows whether North Korea will follow through on actually holding the talks and whether the outcome will be a denuclearized North Korea. Nevertheless, this is certainly a PR win for the White House. Watch the video below to learn more.
