Iran Promises “Severe Consequences” if Trump Ends Iran Nuclear Deal

President Trump has set a May 12 deadline for European nations to change their policy towards Iran. If these changes are not to his satisfaction, Trump has promised to withdraw the United States from the controversial Iran nuclear deal. Iran, however, has said in a statement that if the US does withdraw from the deal there will be “severe consequences”.

President Trump rightfully argues that the Iran nuclear deal gave up too much to soon without doing enough to curb Iran’s nuclear aspirations. Since the deal was put in place, Iran has actually increased their aggression, speeding up their ballistic missile program, intervening in Syria, and continuing to develop their nuclear program.

European leaders such a France’s Emmanuel Macron and Germany’s Angela Merkel, however, hold the position that the Iran nuclear deal is the best available option, and they are currently pushing heavily for Trump to stay in the deal.

It’s important to note that President Trump is not against staying in the deal if it is fixed. Trump wants measures that will counter Iran’s ballistic missile program, increase inspections, and further prohibitions against the country’s nuclear program. If the US’s European allies do not agree to these changes, though, there is a very real possibility that Trump will withdraw the US from the deal entirely.
