It’s a real shame that American politics is so obsessed with pointless culture wars, and that the mainstream media is always happy to cater to that. Yes, things like President Trump selling plastic straws, or CNN’s Andrew Cuomo inventing racial slurs are a ratings guarantee, it’s a distraction from stories that can truly change the world.
What’s happening in Hong Kong is a perfect example. Conveniently, examining it essentially negates everything the American left says about the United States and how it is perceived throughout the world. Your typical Marxist professor or MSM pundit loves to repeat the mantra that the U.S. is reviled everywhere else except within red states. A quick glance at what pro-freedom protesters in Hong Kong are doing proves the opposite.
America is, and has been for at least a century, a utopian symbol for everyone who desires freedom and opposes tyranny. It’s a callback to that classical liberalism: freedom of speech, free markets, the liberty to chart your own path — all the principles the Founding Fathers championed at a time when the world was dominated by monarchs.
There’s a reason why Hong Kong’s citizens are doing what you see them do in the video below — America still represents what many wish their own countries to be.
