Remember when movies were good? Remember when you laughed at jokes because they were funny, and not because you were subversively commanded to via social justice cues? Remember when you could have powerful female leads in films like Alien — without being reminded about the gender identity of the person every ten minutes?
Of course you do — it wasn’t that long ago.
Now, let’s be clear for a minute: Hollywood has always — and we mean always — been a bastion of progressive values. And it makes sense — it’s a culture built by artists who draw inspiration from their feelings rather than what’s right in front of them. In a way, we really can’t fault them for it — there’s a place for that in any society. But the balance has been entirely thrown off, and now film critics complain when there aren’t enough purple transgender lesbians in a movie.
If you thought the “wokeness” of Hollywood peaked with The Last Jedi, that was apparently just the tip of the iceberg. Judging by the trailers we’re seeing for this year’s summer releases, this trend looks like it’s here to stay. And we’re left to question how producers are going to react when these titles inevitably bomb because no one wants to be lectured about social justice in a Terminator movie.
They should have learned from the failures of the past — social justice doesn’t sell tickets. The all-female Ghostbusters reboot bombed so hard that the original creator is simply ignoring it entirely when writing his new script. Star Wars fans are all but given up on the timeless franchise because Kathleen Kennedy basically castrated Luke Skywalker and everyone else that helped blow up the Death Star (twice).
Wait until you see what they have planned next — Mark Dice has the scoop.
