Highlights: President Trump’s 2018 State of the Union Address
President Donald Trump delivered his first official State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress earlier this week.
Prior to taking to the podium, the White House informed national media outlets that the president intended the address to be one of unity — a call to action for both Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill to put aside their differences and pursue legislative action.
Speaking for roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes, President Trump claimed the state of the union was strong, evidenced by a rapidly growing economy and a plummeting unemployment rate across the board. In particular, he noted that unemployment rates for black and hispanic Americans recently reached record lows — a remark that received a standing ovation from Republicans in attendance.
Throughout the event, Democrats visibly resisted showing any support by declining to stand or applaud the president’s comments.
Policy goals outlined included immigration reform, increased military spending, and a comprehensive infrastructure package. While most political analysts expect Democrats to continue resisting Republican-led efforts on those first two items, they note infrastructure plans tend to enjoy bipartisan support.
