Essential Conservative Books Make Perfect Christmas Gifts

We love Christmas. There’s so much that’s great about the holiday. But there’s also good reason to think about why we celebrate it, and maybe to pass on something of greater value to our children than the latest video games.

If we want to defend Christmas from Jesus-hating, America-bashing mobs, we owe it to ourselves to take an honest look at the holiday. To begin, Christmas as we know it today is very new. It was made popular and acceptable by the Coca-Cola company when they commissioned Norman Rockwell to invent the image of Santa Claus.

Before that, Christmas was quite controversial and was opposed by many major Christian groups as cheapening the meaning of Christ’s birthday- which we all know is not in December. The tree comes from pagan symbolism for the continuous growth and rebirth of the natural world, and the star is the sun-god Aton, (sounds a lot like ‘Atom’).

We can admit these things and acknowledge that they are all true. That does not have to stop us from celebrating the birth of a man who represented not only the finest humankind has to offer, but also the idea that the creator of the universe was willing to make a dire sacrifice so that we might overcome our fallen nature. And of course, we can celebrate the wholesome act of giving, which is really fun if you have little kids.

So this Christmas, let’s give our children something more than toys. Let’s give them something that will last a lifetime.

Here’s John Stossel with his idea for a merry Christmas.
